Sunbags

The artists create an intimate landscape of memory, forced displacement, and the fragile process of rebuilding a sense of home. Through the metaphor of sandbags, which have been used to create defensive structures during wartime, the artists turn to the image of a barricade made of pillows.

It is a quiet yet powerful gesture that brings together two artistic practices. Soft, domestic, and almost playful at first glance, the work evokes a sense of safety associated with a grandmother’s home, childhood hiding places, and the comfort of a familiar interior. However, the meaning of the image quickly shifts: the barricade also recalls fortifications made of sandbags that could be seen throughout Ukraine during the war. Comfort and danger coexist within a single form, reflecting a reality in which childhood innocence cannot be completely separated from the prolonged experience of war and violence.
