Memory Ribbon

Kateryna brings her illustrations together in the project “Ribbon of Memory” a series of quick linear drawings created after a long absence from home. Small in scale (10–15 cm), the sketches capture fragile, almost everyday observations and are folded into one continuous ribbon, forming a visual archive of return.

The project unfolds around the theme of loss  not only the loss of things, but also of one’s own identity. Having experienced two migrations, the artist returns to her hometown in Ukraine, where she documents the daily rituals of her grandfather, a retired military officer whose life is closely intertwined with the colonial history of the Soviet Union. Through the intimate act of drawing and the repetition of images, Ribbon of Memory becomes an attempt to stitch together personal and collective memory, capturing the experience of home as a place that constantly slips away.
